Avengers: Doomsday leak: Professor X vs Sentry's Void

A report about Avengers: Doomsday described a scene involving the Avengers, the X-Men and Doctor Doom, and it centered on Sentry. According to the insider, Doom would try to weaponize Sentry and the Void, and Professor X would step into a mental battle to stop it. I think the idea fits Doom, and I'm here for it, as long as Professor X doesn't die on screen again.

At the time, we'd heard about many scenes in Avengers: Doomsday, but not much about how the Avengers and the X-Men would interact. The scene in this report was about them working together.

Will the Avengers fight the X-Men in Avengers: Doomsday?

When Avengers: Doomsday was first announced, early reports said the Avengers were going to fight the X-Men, giving us that classic Avengers versus X-Men storyline for a short stretch of the movie. I assumed that would be when the two teams first meet.

From what we'd heard, Doctor Doom was going to attack the X-Mansion using Sentinels. We'd also heard that the Avengers would show up in the X-Men's universe. My prediction was that the X-Men would assume the Avengers were a threat, just like Doom was. This new scene, though, was about the two teams working together, with Doom trying to manipulate Sentry and use him against the others.

Sentry could reveal Doctor Doom's backstory

We'd already heard a little about Sentry interacting with Doctor Doom. I think Sentry is going to be how we learn something about Doom's backstory. In Thunderbolts, when Yelena or John Walker touched Sentry, we saw a glimpse of their past. I think the same thing is going to happen with Doom.

The new report, though, said Doom would weaponize Sentry and the Void. The insider, who had been leaking a lot of information about the film, stated that Bob, or Sentry, can't use his powers without the Void taking control of his body. That leaves him more fearful and insecure, because he's currently the strongest hero and Avenger alive, and the Avengers need him for the new threat. That threat is Doom.

The post credits scene of Thunderbolts did show us that Bob is afraid to use his powers, because he fears the Void will be unleashed again and he won't be able to control it.

Professor X may help Bob with the Void

Here's where it gets interesting. According to the report, Bob might get help from a psychic mutant: Professor Xavier. I don't want to see Professor X die again. The last time he tried to get into somebody's mind on screen, it was the Scarlet Witch, and that didn't work out for him. Will Marvel make us watch another Professor X death? We'd have to wait and see.

The insider continued: "In Avengers Doomsday, Doom exploits his fragility and fear, creating chaos among heroes, pretending to help, manipulating them into fragile puppets before revealing himself as the true villain."

Why Doom looking like Tony Stark matters

By this point, many different insiders had said Doctor Doom would manipulate the heroes, and specifically the Avengers, because they're the ones who will realize he looks exactly like Tony Stark. Maybe the X-Men's universe had a Tony Stark, but I'm assuming probably not.

Marvel brought Robert Downey Jr. back specifically to play Doctor Doom, and the Russo brothers said no to him for a year when he asked them to return to direct, until the perfect idea for a script came along. That tells me two things. First, it comforts me that this movie is going to be great, because they waited until they had the right idea. Second, it tells me they're going to use the fact that he played Iron Man and now plays Doom as a plot point, and using it to manipulate the heroes makes sense.

The monster version of the Void

The insider went further: "From previs, tech viz, and post viz I've seen involving the sentry, it seems a heavy trigger in Bob will cause the monster void to take over. Not like in the thunderbolts. We're talking about the creature void."

We did see the Void in Thunderbolts, but it came in the form of a shadow Bob. Leaked concept art for the Void had since surfaced, and it looked monstrous. It looks like the Russo brothers are probably going to go with that version over the one in Thunderbolts. It's not a different concept, since the Void can take many forms. It would simply change shape and be more monstrous, which I'm totally here for.

Then the report brought in Professor X: "And the professor X in a mental battle will attempt to end the void once and for all, preventing Bob/thevoid from killing all the heroes." Replying to another post, the insider pointed to that released concept art and said, "It's that void I'm talking about." So, a big monstrous Void villain.

Professor X might be the one who exposes Doom

Manipulating Sentry and the Void to harm the other heroes while convincing them he's trying to help does seem very Doom. It also makes me think that perhaps Professor X is the one who realizes Doom isn't good when he goes inside Bob's head. That's presuming he lives, and I swear he'd better.

If that's the case, it makes me think Doctor Doom really is in the Fantastic Four ship at the end of Thunderbolts. If the Fantastic Four got there first and saw Doom, they would point out that he isn't some Tony Stark figure but Victor von Doom, the man who kidnapped their son. So it would make sense for Doom to be in that ship and reach Earth 616 first. Perhaps the Fantastic Four then track some type of energy there, maybe the Power Cosmic their son apparently has, and that's how they arrive.

The X-Men: The Last Stand connection

Charles Xavier helping Bob with the Void in his mind is a big tie in to X3, X-Men: The Last Stand, where Professor X tampered with Jean Grey's mind by putting psychic barriers in it. Perhaps that's Charles's plan here: putting barriers inside Sentry's mind to keep the Void away.

In the comics, the Void is defeated by erasing Robert Reynolds's mind of any knowledge he has about Sentry and the Void. He has no recollection that he was ever the hero called Sentry, or even that he has powers. That gets rid of the Void, but it also gets rid of Sentry. Perhaps that's the plan. If Doom is manipulating him, and the Avengers, the X-Men and other heroes could take on Doom with Sentry out of the way, then the goal might be to erase his knowledge of his powers. In the comics, Mister Fantastic, Doctor Strange and many others are involved, so it would check out as comic accurate.

The only question is whether Charles would be willing to do this after the mess he caused in X3. We don't know if it's the same timeline. We assume Famke Janssen is returning as Jean Grey, which would mean she didn't die in X3, and Days of Future Past also happened, which may have changed things. Still, I feel Professor X would be cautious, to avoid another Jean Grey Phoenix situation, because it's very similar: a person with immense powers fighting an alter ego. That makes Charles the perfect person to deal with Bob, Sentry and the Void. I just wonder how it's going to work out.

Why Sentry is Doom's biggest threat

If you're Doctor Doom, you can see that Sentry is going to be the strongest of everybody, and weaponizing him is something Doom would do. It also solves a problem: Sentry is too strong in the MCU right now. He's essentially invincible, which is why he has the Void, because it nerfs him. Without it, he would be unstoppable.

We saw what he did to the team in Thunderbolts. He's invincible, he has psychic abilities, he can fly, and he can melt things with his mind, as he did with John Walker's gun. He could probably take Doom out fast if he got the drop on him. We don't know how powerful Doom is in the MCU, and hopefully he's a very powerful sorcerer, but it's easy to see how Sentry could be his biggest threat. Taking Sentry out of the equation would probably be Doom's priority, then using him and the Void to manipulate everybody else.

I'm definitely here for this. I just hope Professor X doesn't die on screen again, although with our luck, he probably will.
