Marvel's NYCC TV Panel: Zodiac Spy Thriller Set for 2028, Daredevil: Born Again Ending With Season 3

Three Marvel Zombies specials, X-Men '97 season 3 and Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man season 2 also surfaced, along with my take on Doomsday leaks and Secret Wars rumors.

Marvel Television used its New York Comic Con panel to announce Zodiac, a live action spy thriller set for release in 2028, and to say that Daredevil: Born Again season 3 will be the last. Zodiac was the only new live action project announced. The rest of the announcements were animated.

Charlie Cox, Finn Jones and Krysten Ritter were on stage, which is pretty cool. The panel also covered Vision Quest, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man season 2, X-Men '97 season 3 and three Marvel Zombies specials. This was a Marvel Television panel, so there was nothing on Avengers: Doomsday.

Zodiac is the one new live action Marvel show, and it fits an insider's description

Marvel has said very little about Zodiac beyond the logo, the fact that it's a live action spy thriller, and the 2028 release. That date puts it after Secret Wars.

An insider reported on this on September 21st, a month before the announcement, and that now reads as a confirmed scoop. According to that report, Zodiac is an X-Files style episodic show led by two to three characters new to the MCU, characters with potentially little to no history in the comics. It's reportedly being developed as TV mature and designed to fit in the background of the MCU, picking up, exploring and expanding stories and characters that haven't been used for a while, as well as introducing new corners to the universe.

It's almost like they're just making new things, which I find interesting. So it doesn't sound like major characters will lead it, though there might be cameos. I don't know why, but when I hear "new corners to the universe," I think of the Midnight Suns. I also feel like it's going to be like Wonder Man. That show is in the MCU and has Easter eggs and references, but it isn't super connected to the wider story.

Secret Invasion is why I'm cautious about Zodiac

I'm really interested in Zodiac, but I'm also concerned, and the reason is Secret Invasion. When I saw its first two episodes, I thought they were really good. The spy espionage tone worked, and the premise of not knowing who to trust was cool. Then the show got away from that, and we both felt it almost played like two different shows.

I still really question the Rhodey decision, and I think that has to be why Armor Wars never got made. In our discussion, the bigger problem raised was that the show tried to take a massive comic event, something you'd build up over multiple phases, and squeeze it into one small series. One theory that came up in our conversation, stated with near certainty, was that this happened while Kevin Feige was stretched thin, since I believe his job changed around that time and he became president over comics as well, and that a call like the Rhodey twist might have slipped through as a result.

We also talked about Maria Hill. The view in our conversation was that she probably deserved to die in a better circumstance than the one she got, and that her death felt done for shock value. Overall, I'm excited for Zodiac, but I'm a little cautious and a little nervous.

Daredevil: Born Again season 3 is the last, and I think that's fine

When Marvel said season 3 would be the last, the crowd booed. I really enjoy Daredevil. But I also think moving away from the shows can put these characters in movies, and that's what I'm really excited about.

Could this just be the end of the Born Again title, with a new Daredevil series later? If they did that, I think they'd go with a new cast. I think this is probably the last season and they aren't kidding. I think they're putting him in other projects, especially movies, and the idea of getting Daredevil ready for the Midnight Suns came up as one possibility.

On the debate over Daredevil not killing Fisk, Batman is my favorite character, but I don't agree with the no killing rule for either of them. There comes a point where the justice system isn't going to work, especially somewhere like Hell's Kitchen or Gotham where corruption means villains will get out one way or another.

Three Marvel Zombies specials will arrive one a year

The three Marvel Zombies specials are Marvel Zombies: The Winter Soldier, a Moon Knight focused special, and Marvel Zombies: The Last Guardian, which centers on the Guardians of the Galaxy. They start at Halloween 2027, and they're coming one a year across 2027, 2028 and 2029.

I'm not the biggest Marvel Zombies fan or the biggest animation fan, because to me animation doesn't really connect to the MCU. But I can appreciate some seasonal stuff, a little Halloween thing to put on. Asked where Kamala Khan might fit, I don't think she does. These look like specific one off stories built around Moon Knight, the Guardians and the Winter Soldier. I do know she's in Doomsday, though, and the Young Avengers have a good role to play there.

Deadpool will appear in X-Men '97 season 3. A new poster for Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man season 2 also dropped, and it looks to me like he's got the symbiote. That's the symbiote symbol, and even the background looks like a symbiote.

Vision Quest's marketing push has us wondering about Doom

Marvel posted a Vision Quest poster styled like an art gallery, called the Vision Quest Collection, inviting people to enter Vision's mind and pursue his memories, with an address for Studio 525 on October 9th. It also says controlled, altered, deleted, because the show is all about going through his memories.

We noted that Marvel is marketing Vision Quest a ton compared with shows like Ironheart, and that it's part of a trilogy of bigger Disney+ shows. The thought was that maybe there's some connection going forward, maybe a post credit scene showing Vision being collected by Doom. Even in our conversation that was called aggressively unlikely, especially since Brand New Day didn't include Doom, though its post credit scene did tease Doomsday or Secret Wars, depending on how you view it. We have also seen leaked art of Vision in it.

A time lapse from the show floor ran past displays including Nightcrawler, Mystique, Gambit, a clear mannequin for Sue Storm, Captain America and Bob. The Doom display was so good. They've nailed it with Dr. Doom, and I feel like they're going to absolutely nail it with Vision Quest as well.

I've heard Marvel is planting fake Doomsday leaks again

I saw a report today that in 2024 Marvel planted fake leaks to protect the Deadpool and Wolverine cameos, with misdirection both online and in person. In person suggests they were telling cast and crew false things. At one point there was a report that Ben Affleck's Daredevil would be in the film because Ben Affleck was on set, while Jennifer Garner, who plays Elektra, was on set too, and they have kids together. I bet they used that to twist some things.

I have heard from a personal source that Marvel is doing it again, and that's why I bring this up. Beyond Report even says it bets 50% of the Doomsday rumors are false. I know some are real, like the Sentinel battle, and we know there will be some deaths. Just as an example, not a leak: if Marvel is actually killing Sam, it could put out a leak that Bucky dies. With Doomsday about two months away, I bet a decent amount of what we've heard is true. I'd say maybe not 50% false. Maybe 40%.

For the next Doomsday trailer, I don't want everything given away the way Spider-Man: Brand New Day revealed its Hulk scenes or Captain America revealed its Red Hulk scenes. I like talking about leaks and rumors all day, but seeing it is so different. I think the next trailer will probably show more of a team forming. If you've seen the leaked Sentinel footage, they might pan across everyone right before that fight, which I don't think shows too much.

I lean toward Doom wanting the Hulk rather than Banner

There's been a lot of talk about whether Doom separates Banner from the Hulk or suppresses him. I've seen three sides: Doom only needs the Hulk's muscle, Doom needs Banner's mind, or Doom wants both. I think both is less likely. I feel like Doom knows time travel and multiverse travel, and I feel like he doesn't need Banner for any of that. Having the Hulk do his bidding is the way I'd lean.

On a Void versus Doom fight, I don't know about the Void specifically, but I think we get a Sentry versus Dr. Doom fight. The Void might go up against someone like Professor X, or maybe Doom wants to use the Void, but I wouldn't hold your breath. Getting the symbiote into Battle World seems easy to me, since the Venom: Let There Be Carnage and No Way Home post credit scenes already set it up for Peter. I think they should do it, and I think giving him the symbiote suit in Secret Wars would very much be part of the Russo brothers' plans.

On a Secret Wars opening with Tobey Maguire and Hugh Jackman in the Void trying to survive Doom, I think that's a decent hope. It might show up more in a Doomsday post credit scene instead. I also don't think there can be a surprise project set between the two films, because there is no universe in between, and I don't think Marvel will introduce Battle World before Secret Wars does.

Secret Wars filming reportedly pushed back as Samuel L. Jackson confirms Nick Fury

I expected cameo news once Secret Wars filming started, but according to Daniel RPK and another reliable insider, filming has been postponed. So right now insiders probably aren't hearing much, though news from the script might get out. Samuel L. Jackson has confirmed Nick Fury will be in Secret Wars. I would expect nothing less. I think there will be quite a few cameos from famous actors and characters. I think Natasha returns in some way too.

My biggest fear is a strange one: that the hype for Secret Wars won't match the hype for Doomsday, which depends on Doomsday. I just think it's going to work out. Based on what I've seen and heard, Marvel seems really back on track, with the quality and storytelling locked down again. "Doesn't mean the movie is going to be perfect. Doesn't even mean it's going to be good, but I feel like it is."

Thor, Wakanda and Brother Voodoo rumors remain rumors

I keep hearing rumors that Thor gets his arm chopped off, and today I heard the replacement arm is part of the Destroyer from the first Thor film. That would be kind of cool. Thor is being taken seriously now. On Love and Thunder, I think Ragnarok's comedy went over so well that, after Endgame's version of Thor, Taika took it way too far.

I heard a rumor that someone will be in charge of Wakanda's section of Battle World and the new Black Panther will fight them for it. That's a total rumor, not a leak or a report from a reliable insider. Brother Voodoo was rumored at one point for Black Panther 3, but I don't think that's probably still the case. I think Cloak and Dagger will show up in the MCU down the line, but not the same from the show. I think it'll be new iterations, MCU versions of the characters. The Rock as Apocalypse has, I think, just been fan casting, and I don't know if he could do that acting. For Beast, I thought Jesse Plemons would be great.

Lanterns was a great show but not a Lanterns story to me

As a show, Lanterns was good. As a Lanterns story based on the comics, I'd say no. There weren't many constructs, you never saw John Stewart in a Green Lantern suit, and you barely saw Hal in his. I don't like what they did with Hal or that he's gone. What I was given was really good, but I also didn't like it as a Green Lantern story.

A 2003 Hulk cameo would be really cool, since there are so many ways to do cameos in Secret Wars, and Lou Ferrigno returning would be pretty cool too. Who knows what we'll actually get.
