Marvel Studios Reportedly Eyeing a Deadpool & Wolverine Trilogy as Hugh Jackman Plans a Decade More in the Role

New reports suggest Marvel wants two more Deadpool and Wolverine films, with Hugh Jackman said to be sticking around after Avengers Secret Wars.

There is a joke going around that Disney brought Hugh Jackman back just to keep him playing Wolverine until he is 90, and it does not sound far off anymore. I think Jackman could end up giving Patrick Stewart a run for his money as the actor who has played a Marvel character the longest, even though Jackman had the advantage of being about 30 years younger than Stewart when he started. New reports have surfaced that Marvel Studios wants a lot more Deadpool and Wolverine, which comes as little to no surprise given how massive that film was.

Marvel Studios reportedly wants two more Deadpool and Wolverine movies

We already knew Deadpool and Wolverine were sticking around at least through Avengers Secret Wars. At one point Patrick Stewart himself said he and Ian McKellen were not yet done with their Marvel roles, which I assume means Marvel Studios plans to bring them back for Avengers Doomsday or at least Secret Wars. Now it looks like Marvel Studios has plans for Hugh Jackman's Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds's Deadpool that extend beyond Secret Wars as well.

Deadpool and Wolverine grossed just over 1.3 billion dollars worldwide and is now the biggest R rated film of all time, so it makes sense that Marvel would want to do more. The reports specifically say Marvel Studios wants a Deadpool and Wolverine trilogy, meaning two more movies beyond the one already released.

Hugh Jackman reportedly plans to stay Wolverine for another decade

According to an insider who goes by My Time To Shine Hello, Hugh Jackman plans to remain the Wolverine of the MCU for at least another decade, and this insider states the Australian actor is not even close to being done. I do not think this is really the first time we have heard Jackman is sticking around, and it seems like a spark was reignited in him with Deadpool and Wolverine, much the same way it seems to have happened with Reynolds and Deadpool.

Hugh Jackman is currently 56 years old, so in a decade he would be 66. Patrick Stewart is still acting well in his 80s, so there is a real possibility Jackman could be around for a very long time if that report holds up.

Marvel's president confirms Deadpool and Wolverine will keep being worked into future films

Marvel Studios' president was asked in a recent interview about future plans for Deadpool and Wolverine, after the film had already been released. He said: "The plans with Deadpool and Wolverine will always be the same, we're always wondering where we can fit them in and how fast." That confirms Deadpool and Wolverine are not done and that Marvel wants to put them in a lot more, and to do it fast.

I am assuming the fast part means Marvel is trying to get them into Avengers Doomsday. We just learned that the Russo brothers are making the script for Avengers Doomsday and Secret Wars entirely their own, scrapping the previous script that Michael Waldron had written for what was going to be Avengers Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars. I would assume Deadpool and Wolverine are now included in that new script.

Avengers Doomsday could reportedly reunite Wolverine with Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man

According to the insider Daniel RPK, described as very reliable, Deadpool and Wolverine are both going to be returning for Avengers Doomsday. Daniel RPK also reported that Marvel Studios is planning to try to get Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine to interact together on screen, since those two are essentially the originals who kicked off the modern superhero wave, with the first X-Men film in 2000 and the first Spider-Man film in 2002.

To have those two original superheroes on screen together for the end of this era of the MCU, a universe their films technically were not even part of until Marvel folded them in, would be something I think is going to be absolutely great to see. We have heard in the past that Marvel wants Secret Wars to partly be a tribute to everything that came before, including the Infinity Saga, essentially a goodbye and an inclusion to the MCU for actors who have said they would have loved to be part of the connected MCU.

The reported soft reboot could reshape the X-Men, the Avengers, and who survives

Marvel Studios is reportedly planning a soft reboot of the MCU after Avengers Secret Wars, which from what has been heard so far would create one main universe that includes the Avengers, the X-Men and mutants, the Fantastic Four, and basically anybody Marvel can use. A lot of people are wondering who survives that reboot, since not everybody is expected to make it through. There is speculation that actors like Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk and Chris Hemsworth as Thor could retire, and we have heard Marvel is planning to recast characters like Iron Man, Black Widow, and Captain America so they can appear alongside the X-Men.

It sounds like Hugh Jackman's Wolverine could be leading that group into the new universe. I would not be surprised if Channing Tatum's Gambit also returns not just for Doomsday and Secret Wars but makes it past the soft reboot and becomes the main Gambit of the MCU going forward.

Why I think Wolverine could survive the reboot to mentor a new X-Men team

If Jackman wants to play Wolverine for a decade, I am sure Marvel Studios is going to let him, and I expect he survives the soft reboot. I think this would be a great opportunity for him to lead and mentor a new X-Men team. I do want there to be a new Wolverine with this new team, but I think it would be cool if the original Wolverine stuck around not just to help the new Wolverine but to help all of the X-Men and Professor X, almost like a Days of Future Past situation with an older Logan telling a younger Professor X that he can lead the X-Men.

Eventually, once the X-Men get older, I think the reins should be handed to a new Wolverine. There is also a possibility Marvel simply makes the two additional Deadpool and Wolverine films more standalone, connected to the rebooted MCU but not deeply tied into it, doing their own thing on the side.

Channing Tatum's Gambit and other legacy characters could carry over

Ryan Reynolds recently said Marvel Studios is obsessed with Channing Tatum's Gambit, and I think a lot of people are too. Anyone who has seen Channing Tatum talk about Gambit in interviews knows he will do anything to play the character again, so between Marvel's interest and his enthusiasm, I think it is safe to say he is coming back. He could be involved in the two additional Deadpool and Wolverine films and might even make it into the soft reboot, especially if Marvel does what the comics sometimes do and resets the universe so everyone only remembers the new timeline.

I think we are finally going to get a new Blade, though at this point I would not be surprised if Wesley Snipes returned as well. I do not think Jennifer Garner's Elektra comes back much, but I am confident we will see X-23 again, especially since she is with Deadpool and Wolverine at the end of that film. Between the audience reaction, the box office numbers, and Jackman wanting to play Wolverine for at least another decade, two more Deadpool and Wolverine movies makes a lot of sense to me.

Would you want Hugh Jackman's Wolverine to stick around after the soft reboot to mentor a new Wolverine and the X-Men, or would you rather he be done once the reboot happens?
