Deadpool & Wolverine Reaction: I Was Left Dumbfounded By How Gory and Awesome It Was

In a spoiler-free reaction, I call the film one of the best Marvel movies yet, praising the humor, the emotional weight and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine return, while flagging pacing and story length as its only real weak points.

Deadpool and Wolverine left me completely dumbfounded. I tried to record a reaction coming out of the theater and just sat there on camera, stunned by what I had just seen, because it was that amazing.

"I just watched Deadpool and Wolverine and it seems like they used these real claws the entire time, it was so bloody, so gory," I said right after walking out. The action does not hold back at all. If anyone still had the idea that being under Disney would soften the R rating, I would drop that notion, because I think Kevin Feige said there would be no restrictions and Bob Iger said it is rated R, with the one exception being a rule about not showing drugs on screen, even though the characters talk about drugs plenty.

The Pacing Had a Few Slow Patches, But the Story Justified Them

There is so much action packed into this movie that the quieter moments in between can feel like a slowdown by comparison. I did think there were some pacing issues, but those slower beats matter, and if you take them for what they are, they land as some genuinely deep character moments for both Deadpool and Wolverine, and for a few other characters too.

If I had one real criticism, it is that the story itself could have been a bit bigger or longer. The film runs about two hours and seven minutes including credits, and I found myself wishing it would keep going. "I don't want this movie to end, I just want it to keep going on and on," I kept thinking during the screening, to the point that I said I could have watched a four hour cut and it would not have felt long.

The Cameos and Nostalgia Actually Serve the Story

There are cameos in this movie, some I did not expect and some I expected that ultimately were not there, and I plan to explain why I think certain ones were left out in a separate spoiler review. The nostalgia running through the film is not just fan service for its own sake, since everything that happened in earlier films feeds directly into this story.

The Jokes and Fourth Wall Breaks Landed for Me

I had heard some people who caught early screenings say the jokes did not all land, but for me every single one did, and my brother sitting next to me was laughing through pretty much the entire runtime. The fourth wall breaks were clever without tipping into cheesy territory, though I noticed a couple of small details some reviewers mentioned that did not actually happen the way described, which made more sense once I saw the film myself.

Where It Ranks Among Marvel's Biggest Movies

This is an event movie, though I do not think it is fair to directly compare it to Avengers Endgame or Infinity War given how massive those films were. Even so, it sits right up there with them for me, and it is easily top five among Marvel films, with a rewatch needed before I can say whether it cracks the top three or four. "If you're asking me is Marvel back, yeah, I would say so," and this felt like top quality work with real heart behind it.

What did you think of Deadpool and Wolverine, and where would you personally rank it among Marvel's best?
