Avengers Endgame Encore Appears Limited To IMAX And Infinity Vision, With A Doomsday Sneak Peek Attached
The September 25 return of Endgame adds four minutes and an exclusive look at Avengers Doomsday, while questions about Doom, Sentry, Magneto and Marvel's marketing keep coming.
From what we found, everyone who sees Avengers Endgame Encore should see the same new material, but the Encore itself apparently only plays on IMAX and Infinity Vision screens. Marvel's ticket post reads: "Tickets now available for IMAX and Infinity Vision screens." Following the ticket link showed only Infinity Vision and IMAX listings.
The Doomsday Sneak Peek Was Rumoured To Be An IMAX And Infinity Vision Exclusive
The question started with reports that the Avengers Doomsday sneak peek would only play in premium formats. One fan said an AMC manager told him the post credits scene was IMAX and Infinity Vision only. Warren had been hearing the same thing, but said "no one came out and confirmed it yet." Marvel has confirmed there is a Doomsday sneak peek, and the trailer that Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. dropped promises "an exclusive look at Avengers Doomsday arriving this December," without saying which screens.
Once we checked the ticket listings, the answer turned out to be yes and no. Everyone who sees the Encore will evidently see the same material, but the Encore only appears to be offered on those two formats. We wondered whether tickets might roll out later for other locations.
We also debated whether Infinity Vision really differs from IMAX. One argument was that IMAX is a brand rather than a standard, and that in terms of quality and experience you can get level with it, though some people see it differently.
Four Extra Minutes Reportedly Give Steve Rogers More At The Funeral
The Encore adds an extra four minutes to Endgame, and from what we understand that includes Steve Rogers talking more at the funeral. Warren is hoping it also offers a glimpse of Steve returning the stones. The Doomsday sneak peek is separate from those four minutes. Warren thinks we probably get a post credits scene, and when it was suggested that this would be the sneak peek itself, he agreed that it might be.
As Warren describes it, the new material bridges the gap from Endgame to Doomsday, and the message is kind of that you have to watch the Encore before Doomsday. Warren is unsure how true that is, "because they want you to go watch Encore."
Chris Thinks Endgame Would Probably Have Passed Avatar Anyway
Warren is really hoping the Encore helps Endgame reclaim the number one spot from Avatar. Chris thinks it probably would have happened anyway and does not think the new scenes or the Doomsday tease were necessary. Warren's reply: "I don't think it's necessary, but I really wanted to."
The excitement is already showing. Popcorn buckets, possibly from Regal, an Iron Man helmet that projects "I love you 3000" and an Infinity Gauntlet glove, sold out in like six minutes. We also agreed that huge numbers of people would go anyway just to see it on the big screen again, and the trailer showing crowd reactions was a reminder of how much we miss that.
Warren Says Sentry Will Get At Least One Big Moment In Doomsday
One fan worried about Bob's absence from the Doomsday trailer. Warren's answer is that he is in it, with plenty of moments and at least one big Sentry moment. He thinks most of the time the characters will be afraid to let Sentry out, but that he eventually does go all out. With 65 plus characters in the film, Warren cautioned against expecting too much screen time.
Warren Leans Toward Doom Having Lived On Earth 828
A fan suggested Steve staying in the past created a branch timeline that produced Doctor Doom instead of Iron Man. Warren said it was maybe "totally plausible," something he had thought of as well, but leans toward Doom being from 828, home of the Fantastic Four, based on how Sue talks about Victor in the special look trailer. He could have started elsewhere and travelled there, but Warren thinks the Reed connection matters.
An insider claimed today that Doomsday don't really talk about the fact that Robert Downey Jr. is playing both of the characters. From what we have heard, the audience only sees Downey as Doom when Doom is separated from everyone else, so the heroes never see it. Warren would like to think Doom knows he looks like Tony and uses that. As for Thor's hand being chopped off, Warren has seen nothing, though the plot leak he covered days ago was called roughly "80% true" by insiders. He wondered whether losing an arm might replace losing an eye.
On why Downey plays Doom, Warren thinks Marvel will have a good reason, but notes it could be simple: Kang and Victor Timely look alike, and Chris Evans played both the Human Torch and Captain America. He added that Evans said Nomad was pitched to him a lot but he did not think it was worth returning until this.
Henry Cavill And Lee Pace Top Warren's Magneto List
Amid rumours around Magneto in the new X-Men film, Lee Pace is one of the biggest names circulating. Warren thinks he would be fine, but has pushed Henry Cavill for about a year and a half. Matt Smith also came up as a fine actor for the role, though we were split on whether he has the look.
Warren Wants Doom To Wipe Out The Kangs
Warren's ideal explanation for the switch from Kang to Doom is Doom killing all the Kangs. He thinks Doom kills Loki in the film, but expects the dead to be resurrected in Secret Wars, reviving the no stakes debate. He also thinks Doom wins in Doomsday, everything cuts to black, and Secret Wars opens a new universe with Doom as its god.
Chris Wants A Doomsday Moment For The Global Fandom
Chris's complaint is the delivery, not the trailers: every Doomsday reveal has come through conventions, scripts, leaks or theatre exclusives, with no event celebrating global fans the way Spider-Man did. Warren agreed Marvel needs something that hits everybody at the same time. The next Doomsday trailer was expected in October.
Mobius And Doctor Strange Reportedly Join The New Doomsday Footage
Warren thinks Marvel is going to start stepping up the Doomsday marketing. According to the reports we are hearing, the new footage will reveal two more characters: Mobius ("not Morbius," as he stressed) and Doctor Strange. He thinks both probably have a pretty big role to play. That leaves us wondering what the Doctor Strange footage would even show. Is it just him being normal, or will they reveal that he is on Doom's side?
A fan asked why nobody recruited Spider-Man if he is in New York. We really do not know, though a post credit scene came up as one possibility, and the Mobius reports could be a connection to Spider-Man. Another fan had heard that an Avengers Tower battle and a multiverse double team sequence were fake. Warren does not think they were fake. What he heard is that they were in the original script and then cut, along with another Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver and Polaris in the X-Men universe. It left us wondering whether we will ever get a five and a half hour director's cut, ideally released on streaming so you can pause it.
Brand New Day Works Without A Big Villain, Says Chris
Warren "personally really loved" Spider-Man: Brand New Day, though there is a pocket of people who did not. He asked those people, with no judgment, why they disliked it and what else they do like, so he can get a gauge on it. Chris pointed out that the general consensus among Spider-Man fans is that it was a pretty good movie.
The lack of a main villain was something Chris raised before seeing it, and it was one of his fears. But when the film ended he was not wondering where the final fight was; only much later did he realise there was no big bad. "So, they did a good enough job that I didn't even think about it for a while." We both felt it flowed well and was not anticlimactic. There was a theory that Jean was speaking to Peter through the masked kid at the end, sensed by his spider sense, and we both liked it. A comment calling No Way Home better than Brand New Day also drew agreement, with the view that it is "the best Spider-Man film ever made."
We compared it to Shang-Chi, where Wenwu seems like the villain before the giant monster turns out to have been tricking him. A fan felt there was no serious threat and was underwhelmed. Warren said that if it were up to him, he would have had Kingpin secretly running the DODC and stepping out at the end, and maybe some people would have liked that better.
Warren Wants Every Possible Cameo In Secret Wars
A fan suggested bringing back Eric Bana's Hulk for Secret Wars, and Warren agreed. He thinks Marvel should bring back everyone they possibly can, because when will they be able to do it again? It does not have to take away from the movie: in a giant portal scene, background Wakandan warriors and sorcerers could simply be swapped for cameos. He thinks this might be the last chance for something like 15 years, because he does not think we are going much deeper into the multiverse after this.
On Ghost Rider, he wonders whether it will be Ryan Gosling, Nicolas Cage or someone completely different. Many insiders say the plot leak is incredibly accurate, though some things have been taken out since, which he sees as normal for scripts.
The X-Men Cast Lands, Except For Professor X
Warren likes the actress cast as Rogue despite the criticism she gets, thinks Storm is on point, likes Kit Connor as Cyclops and loves Adam Driver as Mister Sinister. He is still not sure about Xavier, and Chris said that was "word for word" what he was thinking, adding that he is sure the actor will be fantastic. Of all the fan art, Xavier is the one who has not looked right, and Patrick Wilson came up as what felt like a better choice.
A fan disliked villains beaten by talking. Warren liked the Aunt May speech, but thought Sam talking down Red Hulk was lame and that the Sentry should have physically fought the Void. He prefers physical fights in superhero movies.
Endgame Encore, Infinity Vision And The Eternals
Warren would watch Endgame Encore even with no new footage or Doomsday sneak peek, which may come before the film or after the credits. On Infinity Vision outside the US, Disney confirmed 300 certified screens abroad, with 7,500 certification applications submitted globally. Warren is also happy that the Eternals are apparently planned to return for an AXE event, something multiple insiders have mentioned, with Alex Perez the first he recalls.
Gambit, Phase 7 And Who Should Never Be Recast
Warren does not think Channing Tatum will play Gambit in the X-Men films, though he wants him to keep playing the character. He thinks Gambit appears in the second X-Men movie, not Ghost Rider. We are hearing of multiple X-Men films not far apart. He expects Phase 7 to open with Black Panther 3, Ghost Rider, Nova and X-Men, with the big crossovers in Phase 8. His biggest disappointment would be no Kang, and he wants Doom so powerful the heroes can only overwhelm him together.
Warren would be upset at a Scarlet Witch recast, but Chris would not mind any recast, even Spider-Man, and thinks people may start to hate Tom Holland if he does enough films. Thor is the one we would both protect, though moving Chris Hemsworth into an Odin role would be fine. Warren sees Miles and Gwen as the future of Spider-Man, with Peter as a mentor.
For the Avengers after Secret Wars, he expects survivors plus new recruits, perhaps Cassie Lang and Kate Bishop. We both saw that Kathryn Newton may be digitally added to Endgame. Should Marvel ever recast Thor?
