Avengers: Doomsday Set Leak Reportedly Confirms Deadpool and Wolverine Are Back for the Fight Against Doom
New aerial drone footage of the set points to a specific scene from Deadpool and Wolverine, complete with the Deadpool Corps and Cassandra Nova, being restaged for the upcoming Marvel crossover.
A new set leak points to Hugh Jackman's Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool showing up in Avengers: Doomsday. Aerial drone shots from the same online leaker who has been posting behind-the-scenes set footage in recent weeks show a build that matches, shot for shot, the location from the end of Deadpool and Wolverine where the two heroes face off against the Deadpool Corps.
If I rewind the clock to before Deadpool and Wolverine even hit theaters, industry insider Daniel RPK reported in a scoop that Kevin Feige was so impressed with the film that he wanted Deadpool and Wolverine to be a huge part of Avengers 5 and Avengers 6. Back then the script was still being worked out and the Russos were not even confirmed to direct, so the door was open. When the first round of Avengers: Doomsday casting announcements went out, though, Jackman and Reynolds were nowhere to be found.
The Set Matches the Void, Not the TVA Headquarters I Expected
When word came that new footage of this set was coming, my first guess was that it would be either the inside of the TVA headquarters or the void set with the Fox sign outside, especially since insiders like Daniel RPK had suggested audiences would be introduced to Battleworld during Deadpool and Wolverine. What actually turned up was the void set, matched against the exact same shots from the Deadpool and Wolverine trailer to confirm the location.
Since that film came out, a number of theorists have floated the idea that the void and Battleworld might end up being one and the same, with Doom killing every timeline and reassembling whatever survives in the void at the end of time. I am not convinced that theory still holds up, or that the story even needs to go there, but seeing this particular scene chosen for reshoots makes the location itself the most interesting part of the leak, more so than the confirmation that Deadpool and Wolverine are involved at all.
Cassandra Nova and the Deadpool Corps Turn Up in the Same Scene
To be fair to all the possibilities here, Deadpool and Wolverine are not the only characters in this scene. Cassandra Nova is present for at least part of it before she takes off to pursue her own plans to ruin reality, and the full Deadpool Corps is there as well. It is possible someone is simply passing through the multiverse, the way the Council of Reeds or America Chavez might, to recruit Deadpool and Wolverine for the fight against Doom.
It is also possible Doom needs to get through Cassandra Nova as one of the more powerful threats left in the multiverse standing between him and total domination, or that he is looking to recruit her, since leaks and theories have often suggested Doom shows up with a team of villains to face the Avengers. I want to be realistic about that idea, though.
Marvel Studios does not have time to double back on a character like Cassandra Nova in this film. I do not even know how they are going to get through the characters already announced, let alone double or triple that cast by bringing in more villains at this stage.
Who Is Actually Recruiting Deadpool and Wolverine to Fight Doom
One idea worth floating is that Deadpool and Wolverine end up leading the entire Deadpool Corps against Doom. As much as I would love to see that, I also think it is pretty unlikely.
The more realistic explanation, to me, is that the Fantastic Four and the Council of Reeds figure out how to travel the multiverse by the end of Fantastic Four, or that someone like America Chavez is the one reaching out to these specific characters. Worth keeping in mind is that Wolverine was originally an anchor being in the timeline designated 10,005, and that this particular Wolverine replaced him as such. That points toward a theory that whoever is doing the recruiting is specifically going after anchor beings or heroes needed for the fight against Doom.
Why I Do Not Consider This a Real Spoiler
I never thought there was any real chance Deadpool and Wolverine would be left out of this movie, so I do not consider this footage a spoiler in any meaningful sense. What is genuinely interesting here is the location, not the fact that the characters are coming back.
Think about it from the Russos' side. After Infinity War and Avengers Endgame, having Hugh Jackman's Wolverine in the MCU was probably the biggest, craziest dream they could have had. Coming back to do it all again, Jackman's Wolverine has to be on the table, and it is hard to imagine he was not one of the very first names pinned up with a note that said make this work. As I put it, "as a guy who is literally just a fan first before I did this channel, I am starting to feel that indelible excitement well up inside of me."
The Russos' Endgame Approach Suggests They Will Not Overload the Story
As long as Marvel keeps this fun and handles it right, I think it is going to be a strong movie, and I do not see a real reason to expect otherwise. Infinity War and Avengers Endgame had plenty of places the Russos could have stumbled, like explaining exactly how Tony figured out time travel or how he built the Infinity Gauntlet. They skipped over all of that and let the audience's imagination fill in the blanks instead of getting bogged down in scenes that were not necessary.
That same instinct matters here, because a film with this many characters involved is already going to be complicated. That is a big part of why I do not think Marvel is going to start layering in other villains like Cassandra Nova on top of everyone else. There are already a lot of characters in front of this story, with Deadpool and Wolverine now part of the mix however they end up getting pulled across the multiverse.
What the Deadpool Corps Getting Wiped Out Would Actually Prove
The idea of the Deadpool Corps going up against Doom and getting mowed over sounds pretty awesome on its own. But I have to ask what that would really prove, given that in their own film the Deadpool Corps already got mowed over by Deadpool and Wolverine themselves.
What other implication do you think this scene could have for Avengers: Doomsday beyond the Fantastic Four, the Council of Reeds, or America Chavez showing up to pull Deadpool and Wolverine into the fight against Doom?
