Tom Holland's Latest Comments May Have Just Spoiled Spider-Man Brand New Day's Ending

Two new interview quotes about the film's final frame have me convinced the symbiote and black suit Spider-Man are coming, and possibly not in the way test audiences expected

With exactly two weeks left until Spider-Man Brand New Day hits theaters, the press junket has hit an all-time high, and I think Tom Holland just gave us our biggest hint yet about how this movie actually ends. Two separate recent interview clips have me convinced the final frame of the film ties directly into the symbiote and black suit Spider-Man, and it matters because it could reshape everything fans think they know about where this story is headed into Secret Wars.

This matters to fans because we are getting new interviews and brand new footage every single day right now, including fresh looks at Spider-Man and the Punisher fighting Hulk. As I have said before, when actors do this many interviews for the same film, they tend to answer the same questions over and over until, late in the junket, they start getting a little more daring with what they are willing to reveal. That is exactly what seems to be happening with Tom Holland right now.

Tom Holland says the Brand New Day of the title is the last frame of the movie, not the beginning

In a recent interview, Tom Holland talked about the very last frame of Spider-Man Brand New Day as it relates to the title. His exact quote was: "The brand new day of this movie, it isn't the beginning. It's the last frame of this movie."

I am certainly not going to argue with the lead actor about his own interpretation of the script, since he is literally the one making the movie. That said, you cannot deny that the title Brand New Day also sort of sums up where Spider-Man is at the very beginning of this film, reset with no money, no benefactor, and no connection to any of the characters who surrounded and loved him throughout the Infinity Saga. Still, Holland insists the actual Brand New Day starts with the very last frame of the movie, not the opening.

Test screenings reportedly loved everything except the ending

This is where things get interesting when you line it up with everything we have heard about the film over the last six months from internal test screenings and early reviews. Nearly all of it has been raving, best Spider-Man movie ever, A-plus across the board, 100 percent. Except for the ending. Apparently at some point the ending either did not quite fit the film, or test screening audiences felt it was not the right note to end on. Some of it has even been rumored to actually make people mad.

I will issue the lightest of spoiler warnings here. If you have not been keeping up with channels covering this, there has been a plot leak circulating that has basically been corroborated multiple times, which describes Peter Parker going off to die after an intense action sequence at the end of the film. I think the negative reaction from test audiences would make sense in that context. After a brilliant, colorful, action-filled movie featuring Hulk versus the Punisher and Spider-Man, plus Jean Grey, it does not feel right for it to end with him simply accepting that he is going to die.

My theory: the symbiote saves Peter and sets up the black suit for Secret Wars

We have had a theory on the channel that this is perfectly setting up the symbiote, the same one left over in a post-credit scene that was never followed up on, which we know is somewhere in the 616 based on the comics. Our theory is that in his hour of need, on his deathbed, the symbiote finds him and bonds with him, giving him new life at a critical moment and granting him the black suit Spider-Man, the same look that originated in the 1984 Secret Wars comic run.

Our personal theory is that whoever was shown this film for test screenings may have had that specific detail omitted, or it may have been saved entirely for a post-credit scene. If Holland means the last frame of the film, that could technically include the post-credit scene, but I think he more likely means the last frame of principal photography, which would mean the actual Brand New Day is him receiving the symbiote and the black suit ahead of Avengers Secret Wars. We strongly believe on this channel that he will not be part of Avengers Doomsday, which factors into this theory.

Tom Holland and Jon Bernthal hint the Punisher and Spider-Man scene changed during filming

In a separate official interview released the day before, Tom Holland and Jon Bernthal discussed their on screen relationship, and Holland talked about the end of the movie, saying the scene between Punisher and Spider-Man at the end is very different from what was originally written. According to Holland, director Destin Daniel Cretton embraced the chemistry emerging between the two actors, and even though the scene was not originally written this way, they started riffing off a little brother, big brother dynamic that changed the discourse and dialogue in that final scene.

Something is clearly going to happen between the Punisher and Spider-Man at the end of the film, and this is exactly why I love it when actors do this many interviews. After being asked the same question ten times, they eventually start saying something different, and here Holland is essentially admitting something significant takes place between the two characters in that closing scene, which may tie into the reset he is describing with the title.

How this connects to the single post-credit scene and Avengers Doomsday

Earlier today we covered the idea that there is only one post-credit scene in Brand New Day, and that it actually ties into Avengers Doomsday. Since I already believe Peter Parker is not going to be part of Avengers Doomsday, my best guess is that this post-credit scene will show an impending incursion over New York, possibly featuring Earth 828 or Earth 10005, or both, hanging low in orbit under a red sky.

Even so, I think saving the symbiote reveal for the post-credit scene would be far more poignant. Picture seeing Peter Parker in an almost death state at the very end of the film, accepting his fate, and then in the post-credit scene the symbiote creeps up on him and bonds with him. That would explain why test audiences who saw the ending but not the post-credit scene would not know the symbiote saves his life at the last moment, and it sets up everything perfectly. At the end of the day, there was no way Sony and the MCU were going to finish this next Spider-Man trilogy without giving us black suit Spider-Man at some point, and since that suit originated in Secret Wars in the comics, the timing feels perfect for it to happen now.

Do you think Tom Holland's "last frame" comment points to the symbiote reveal happening in the movie itself, or is he really talking about a post-credit scene?
