Avengers Doomsday's TVA Scene Hides the Most Complete Map of the Multiverse Yet
The Endgame Encore credits scene reports 3,000 universes destroyed, and 38 specific universes can be identified on the TVA's screens.
The Avengers Doomsday TVA scene shown in the credits of Avengers Endgame Encore gave us the most complete map of the multiverse that we have ever seen. We learned that the Fox X-Men universe of Earth 10005 is fighting an incursion war with the mysterious Earth 11127. The TVA is reporting 3,000 universes destroyed, but we were able to confirm exactly 38 specific universes shown in this scene, and I am going to break them all down and explain what I think is really happening here.
This scene appeared during the credits of Avengers Endgame Encore screenings on premium formats like IMAX and Dolby. If you saw the film on a standard screen, you did not get these scenes. Later in this piece I will get to my theory about who might be behind all of this.
The TVA has moved on from Loki season 2 and now honors Loki as employee for all time
The scene is set sometime after the finale of Loki season 2. That is when Loki variant L1130, the one who escaped during the time heist in Avengers Endgame, worked with and sometimes against the Time Variance Authority and Owen Wilson's Mobius. He eventually sacrificed himself to become the god of stories, sitting at the center of all time and physically holding all the strands of time together in a balanced multiverse so that everything does not get destroyed. The TVA now honors Loki with a framed portrait naming him employee for all time.
Season 2 ended with Mobius, B15, Casey, OB and a rebooted Miss Minutes working in a new TVA, whose mission is now to allow the multiverse to grow naturally rather than following the old orders to violently prune every branch timeline. Mobius was also carefully monitoring the Kang situation after the events of Quantumania. In this new scene, Mobius rejoins OB, Casey and several other TVA techs in a new monitoring room, including the analyst from Deadpool and Wolverine who had the I like me mug.
Earth 10005 and Earth 11127 are firing missiles at each other in an incursion
The screens in that room depict the sacred timeline vertically oriented in a treelike structure inspired by Yggdrasil, the world tree of Asgardian mythology. Separately from this tree, we see depictions of actual spherical Earths colliding in incursions. Earth 10005 and Earth 11127 are in an incursion and, for the first time, defensively firing missiles at each other, to the shock of these TVA agents.
On another screen, Earth 7355 and Earth 8558 are actually colliding. They are not firing missiles, just smashing into each other, and both are destroyed. OB watches as each universe line goes from yellow to red to disappearing entirely, while a ticker runs along the bottom. On that ticker we could see Earth 312 terminated, Earth 828 monitoring, Earth 43214 terminated, Earth 32443 monitoring, Earth 616 monitoring and Earth 20003 monitoring.
Every node on the TVA's tree is an Earth, which is the detail I missed at first
What I did not see at first is that each of the lines forming the tree shape has a node at the bottom along an X axis, with numerical universe designations beneath it. Each of these nodes is an Earth. Each circle represents an Earth, and the line it is connected to represents that Earth's historical trajectory through time, snaking upward through its years, through the protective hands of Loki as god of stories, until somewhere above his head that timeline reaches its natural end, either because its anchor being has died or through some other apocalyptic event.
So this screen is, for the first time, trying to reconcile the MCU's understanding of time as a line and a universe as a spherical Earth in one graphic. Do not think too hard about why an entire universe is represented just by its Earth and not by other planets or star systems. It could just be that only Earths face the risk of incursions from other universes' Earths because of some unique traits of Earth and its inhabitants, and not planets like Saturn, Xandar, Sakaar or Hala. If it helps, you can think of an entire universe containing its little Earth as spherical. Loki season 1 episode 6 did seem to suggest that, when we pulled away from a universe in the opening sequence right before its big crunch and big bang.
The 38 universes identified on the TVA's screens
The numbers along that X axis are hard to make out, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe fandom wiki has begun to label them. Here is the total list we know so far:
- Earth 616, the primary MCU universe, labeled on the ticker as monitoring
- Earth 828, the universe of the Fantastic 4 and Fantastic 4 First Steps, also monitoring
- Earth 10005, the universe of the Fox X-Men, fighting Earth 11127, and I am guessing 10005 wins that conflict
- Earth 11127, a new universe, probably soon to be terminated
- Earth 7355, a new universe, terminated
- Earth 8558, a new universe, terminated
- Earth 005, Earth 4678
- Earth 7712, from Marvel comics
- Earth 12500, Earth 1345, Earth 7373, Earth 255, Earth 0304
- Earth 1999
- Earth 26048, Earth 3678, Earth 21506, Earth 0004, Earth 3333, Earth 48871, Earth 5684, Earth 8711, Earth 2548, Earth 5543, Earth 5124
- Earth 312, terminated
- Earth 820, from Marvel comics
- Earth 100052, Earth 45552, Earth 215, Earth 762, Earth 506, Earth 809, Earth 2024
- Earth 32443, monitoring according to the ticker but soon after terminated
- Earth 20003, monitoring according to the ticker but soon after terminated
- Earth 43214, definitely terminated already according to the ticker
Earth 7712 is an alternate reality from What If number 6 in 1977, which asked what if the Fantastic 4 had different superpowers. Reed Richards becomes a disembodied super telepathic brain, Sue Storm becomes Ultra Woman, Johnny Storm becomes a cyborg, and Ben Grimm becomes the winged reptilian Dragon Man, and they form their own Fantastic 4.
Earth 312 is mentioned in the Fantastic 4 story line from 2003 as one of many realities fractured by the exploration of the multiverse by time breakers. It is a slower moving reality where the modern age of heroes was just beginning, the last known active superhumans being Captain America and the Golden Age Invaders during World War II, and its history tracks the comics' Earth 616 up until the modern era. So I was thinking that 312 could be the branch timeline formed by Steve deciding to stay in the past with Peggy. But it has been terminated here, and by the looks of it, recently.
Earth 820, in the comics, is an alternate X-Men limbo reality from a magic story line associated with 1980s Uncanny X-Men. In it, the X-Men travel into Limbo to rescue Illyana Rasputin but are systematically killed, Nightcrawler is manipulated into serving Belasco, and the events connect to the alternate fate of Storm and Illyana.
Only Earth 616, Earth 828 and Earth 10005 are left standing
At the end of the scene, when the tree displays in the background, only three Earth lines are left illuminated: Earth 616, Earth 828 and Earth 10005. To be clear, there are no sightings of known Marvel movie universe numbers like the Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi Spider-Man universe of Earth 96283, the 2005 Fantastic 4 universe of Earth 121698, or the 2015 Fantastic 4 universe of Earth 15866. We are going to keep looking, though.
How the X-Men of Earth 10005 could win their incursion war
If it is just nuclear ICBMs being fired at the North Americas of both Earths, I do not think that would be enough to stop the momentum of an entire Earth barrelling into another. So my theories have been that the Professor X, Beast and Magneto of Earth 10005 have invented some incursion defensive weapon. That could be an antimatter missile, which might cause the approaching Earth to implode in chunks into small localized black holes, or a global EMP that could invert the electromagnetic field of the enemy Earth's core, using planetary magnetism to overcome gravity and repel it.
"Before you call me crazy, Magneto has used powers on a global scale before." And in Reed Richards' diagrams on the screen in Avengers Tower in the July 20th trailer, the cores of these three surviving Earths are depicted as magnets. As I put it, "Jesse Pinkman's favorite science tool is still a possibility here."
Why I think Doctor Doom is nudging these incursions along
The real question is why this multiverse collapse is happening now. One explanation is that Doctor Doom has attacked Loki where he sits at the center of the tree. The first credits scene for Endgame Encore shows Loki sparing Steve and Peggy moments after Steve created his new branch timeline, and we think Loki is going to relocate them to the 828 universe, maybe causing some incursion that impacts Victor von Doom and his family. That would certainly anger Doom and make him want to target Loki. When I toured the D23 Doomsday TVA experience in August, it ended by suggesting that someone completely attacked the TVA.
Loki season 2 suggested that Loki physically holding these timelines in place is the one thing keeping everything from collapsing, and implied that with the temporal loom gone and nothing keeping it in balance, all of existence would be spaghettified. But that would not explain why 616, 828 and 10005 are spared. So this suggests to me that these incursions are being nudged on by something Doom is doing. He may have discovered why it is always Earths that are the link points of these universes and why they are most vulnerable to incursions, and I think that informs his plan to simplify everything into one big Earth with all the best parts of the diversity of Earths across these universes.
The 3,000 destroyed universes are not a random number
The 3,000 figure is obviously a direct reference to I love you 3000, the phrase exchanged between Morgan Stark and her father Tony Stark in Avengers Endgame. But there must be more than 3,000 universes. Logically, if there is an Earth 48871, there have to be somewhere around 50,000 Earths. If there is an Earth 96283, there have to be at least 100,000. And if there is an Earth 701306, the number for the Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner Daredevil universe, there is probably an infinite number of them.
Yet Doom only seems to be using 3,000 so far, and beyond that, sparing three more. In my words, "these numbers do not feel random." They feel intentional, plotted by Doom to handpick the worlds he wants to use to build his utopia. It is amazing to me that the opening sequence of Avengers Doomsday is going to show us this from the point of view of multiverse mission control in the TVA, Apollo 13 style, and I love that we get to see the TVA from the Loki series with the Russos' camera work and Alan Silvestri's music.
Constantin Film links Avengers Doomsday, Fantastic 4 and Resident Evil
One more connection: Constantin Film, the German studio credited as a producer on Resident Evil, will also be in the opening credits of Avengers Doomsday and every Fantastic 4 movie, because it bought the Fantastic 4 film distribution rights in the 1980s. Roger Corman's 1994 Fantastic 4 went through them. They also have the rights to the Resident Evil games, so every Resident Evil movie and every movie with a Fantastic 4 character like Doctor Doom has to go through them, and they get special carveout deals for both Avengers Doomsday and Avengers Secret Wars.
Do you think Doom is handpicking which universes survive, or is Loki's grip on the timelines simply failing?
