Avengers: Doomsday: how do the heroes reach Loki and the TVA?
An insider claimed Doctor Doom would destroy the TVA and that a variant hero team would form, which could explain how the Avengers reach Loki.
One piece has been missing from the plot that the Avengers: Doomsday reports have pieced together: how the heroes learn about the Time Variance Authority (TVA) and get there. A report from an insider who has been reporting a lot about Avengers: Doomsday seemed to supply it. It suggested that Sylvie would guide the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men on matters related to the TVA, the Void and Loki, and I imagine that means she actually physically takes them to the TVA. Plot-wise, I think that makes a lot of sense.
The same report claimed Doctor Doom would completely destroy the TVA. Nothing in it was confirmed, so it's worth taking with a grain of salt. But if even a fraction of what we've been hearing about Avengers: Doomsday is true, this movie is going to be crazy, and it needs to be.
Why Avengers: Doomsday needs to go all in on the multiverse
The film needs to take full advantage of the multiverse while the MCU is still in the Multiverse Saga. Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, confirmed that the MCU timeline would reset after Avengers: Secret Wars. After that, we probably won't deal too much with the multiverse, at least not for a while.
The reason is that Marvel will have to set up the new X-Men and the new Avengers. Marvel also said it would eventually recast Iron Man and Captain America. So Doomsday needs to go all out with the multiverse, and the same goes for Secret Wars.
The missing link: how the Avengers reach Loki and the TVA
We'd already heard that, after everything is said and done, Avengers: Doomsday would lead to Loki and the TVA. A lot is set to happen before then. There are the X-Men from one universe, the Fantastic Four from another and the Avengers from the main 616 sacred timeline. Then there is Doctor Doom, who is probably going to visit many different universes.
If what we've been hearing is true, Doom will travel the multiverse with Franklin Richards, the son of Reed and Sue of the Fantastic Four. Given the post-credits scene of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, I think that most likely is true. We've also heard there would be a big multiversal battle at the TVA once Doom and the Avengers get there. What's been missing is how the Avengers find out about the TVA and how they manage to get outside of space and time.
The heroes do have options. By Avengers here, I mean all of the good characters in the film, not only the MCU's actual Avengers. That includes Mister Fantastic, the smartest man alive, and Doctor Strange, who learned a lot about the multiverse in Multiverse of Madness. His story was set to continue in either Doctor Strange 3 or Avengers: Doomsday, whichever came first, and it looked like Doomsday would come first.
Still, I don't think that's how the characters will find out about the TVA. My theory is that Loki will recruit the heroes, including the Avengers, the X-Men and the Fantastic Four, to fight Doom. He'll be trying to save himself, which in turn saves the entire multiverse. It also sounds like Doom hates the TVA because of what Kang did, which I'll get to below.
James Mack reported that Doctor Doom destroys the TVA
James Mack has reported a lot about Avengers: Doomsday. According to him, Doctor Doom will completely destroy the TVA in the film. Again, this isn't confirmed. He also claimed an Avenger will die as a form of sacrifice to save Sylvie.
The most interesting part was his claim that the TVA would assemble a team of variant heroes, including Captain Carter, Deadpool, Wolverine and Laura Kinney, also known as X-23. According to these reports, Sylvie would guide the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men on matters related to the TVA, the Void and Loki.
This is the missing link we'd been waiting for: someone from the TVA, someone from Loki's team, reaching out to the Avengers to tell them what's happening and how to get there. In this case, I imagine she'd be physically taking them to the TVA.
Why Sylvie makes sense after the Loki season 2 ending
Loki's involvement in Avengers: Doomsday has been an open question for a while. Based on the ending of Loki season 2, Loki can seemingly look into any branch of the multiverse connected to him. He's keeping every individual branch alive. But it also seems he has to stay at the Citadel on his throne, connected to every branch, for them to survive. At the end of season 2, he grabs one branch and it comes to life, then he lets go and it dies.
So he seems to have to physically touch the branches. Yet Loki is the one who can see Doctor Doom, because he can look into other universes. How does he get involved? How does he warn the Avengers? Sylvie is the answer.
It makes total sense that Sylvie and everyone else at the TVA, such as Mobius, Ouroboros and B-15, would be alerted by Loki to what's going on. They would then be charged with assembling a protective group, a multiversal Avengers team.
Deadpool, Wolverine, X-23 and Captain Carter as a TVA team
Who would they look to? Deadpool and Wolverine, who saved the entire multiverse in Deadpool & Wolverine. At the end of that film, B-15 came face to face with the two of them. And the TVA did Deadpool a favor by bringing back X-23, Gambit, Blade and Elektra.
We didn't see Blade and Elektra on screen. But since the TVA brought back X-23 and Gambit, we assume it brought back the others too. Whether they'll be in Doomsday remains to be seen. From what I understand, Gambit is confirmed for the movie, and X-23 appeared at the end of Deadpool & Wolverine.
So a team with them and Captain Carter makes sense. This could be the Captain Carter from the very end of What If, but we'll have to wait and see.
From there, Sylvie would contact the Avengers because Thor, Loki's brother, is part of the team. That makes perfect sense to me. She would tell everyone Doom's real plan: to get to the TVA and probably dethrone Loki.
Doctor Doom's grudge against Kang and the TVA
We've heard many reports about Doom, but we still don't know his primary goal. Alex Perez of The Cosmic Circus says Doom will believe himself to be the hero, which is how it is in the comics. Maybe Doom thinks he could rule the multiverse better than Loki, which is why he wants to dethrone him, and in doing so he destroys the multiverse. We'll have to wait and see.
As for why he wants to reach the TVA, a past report said Doom is angry at Kang for creating the TVA and secluding the sacred timeline. By that logic, Kang could have secluded the X-Men, the Fantastic Four and Doom himself from that universe. Using the TVA, Kang prevented the multiverse from existing and blocked what Loki was after all along: free will. That would explain why Doom wants to destroy the TVA.
Remember that nobody knows anything about this Loki, because the main 616 Loki died. Even Thor doesn't know about the current variant. Most people who heard that Loki rules the multiverse would probably assume he's bad. That's why Sylvie and the other TVA characters are so important. They have to explain to the Avengers that the TVA is good, Loki is good and holding it all together, and Doom is the threat.
Given his anger at Kang, Doom will probably hear that Loki is in charge and assume it's the same thing Kang was doing. In his mind, Loki is probably a villain, now in charge of the multiverse. So he seeks to destroy the TVA and Loki.
The heroes reportedly fail in Avengers: Doomsday
That's where the multiversal team and the main Avengers come in. By main Avengers, I mean two different teams: the Thunderbolts and Sam Wilson's Avengers. They'll be joined by the Fantastic Four, the X-Men and leaders of Wakanda and Talokan, Shuri as Black Panther and Namor. Then there's the multiversal team with Deadpool, Wolverine, X-23, Captain Carter and Sylvie, all fighting Doom to save the TVA, Loki and the multiverse.
From what it sounds like, they fail. The TVA gets destroyed, Loki gets dethroned and the multiverse is destroyed too. That's what we expected at the end of Avengers: Doomsday if the story is heading to Battleworld and Avengers: Secret Wars, so it's no big shock that Doomsday will probably end with the Avengers losing, as they did in Infinity War.
What we now have is the missing link: Sylvie, most likely directed by Loki, leads the heroes to the TVA. Plot-wise, that makes a lot of sense, and I like the idea of a multiversal Avengers team that makes good use of the multiverse.
