Spider-Man: Brand New Day's Post-Credit Scene Explained: Three Theories on Peter Parker's Mysterious Location
The post-credit scene confirms Peter Parker has left Earth, and I think I know exactly what caused the glitch that got him there.
The post-credit scene in Spider-Man: Brand New Day tells us one clear thing: Peter Parker is no longer on our planet. I have three theories about where he actually ended up, and I want to walk through all of them, from the one I think is most likely, to the one I think fans actually want, to the one that might be the most interesting of all.
What is really interesting about this post-credit scene is that it is kind of inherently flawed. Throughout the movie we learn that Ned has created a Spidey tracker, and the way it works is that people report where they saw Spider-Man recently, and that is how it tells you where he is. In the post-credit scene, we see a new alert. He is in Queens. The tracker zooms out, we see our Earth, and then it starts to move into space and glitches. That glitch is the part to remember. Then, all of a sudden, it says Spider-Man is found, and he is in the middle of space.
The Glitch in the Spidey Tracker Is the Key Detail to Remember
The scene does not really make logical sense, since nobody could have seen him and reported it if he is out in the middle of space on a different planet. But it ultimately does not matter, because the point they are trying to get across is made: he is indeed not on Earth anymore. I do believe I know exactly what that glitch was, and it ties directly into Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, which is what I think a lot of people wanted from this.
Theory One: Peter Parker Is Now on Battleworld After Doctor Doom Wins
The first and most likely explanation is that Peter Parker is now on Battleworld. This makes the most sense, especially because of the glitch. That glitch is most likely Doctor Doom winning in Avengers: Doomsday and reshaping the entire multiverse into one, and that reshaped multiverse would be Battleworld. We haven't really heard much about Tom Holland's Spider-Man being in Avengers: Doomsday, unfortunately, though he might be in it a little bit. We do believe Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man is going to be in Doomsday, but Tom Holland's involvement has been much quieter.
At the very end of Brand New Day, the film says Spider-Man will return, but notice it did not say he will return in Avengers: Doomsday specifically, and that could very well be because he is not actually in that movie. What we have heard is going to happen at the end of Doomsday is that the Avengers are not going to beat Doctor Doom, and Doom is going to let the multiverse be destroyed and then reshape it into one universe: Battleworld. That glitch is most likely him doing exactly that, dropping Peter Parker onto a different planet, that planet being Battleworld, ahead of Avengers: Secret Wars.
Theory Two: Spider-Man Joins the Avengers in Doomsday Through Yelena Belova
The second theory, and I think this is what most fans would actually want, is that he is in Avengers: Doomsday, physically leaving our planet with the Avengers to go to another universe. We already know there are going to be three main universes in Doomsday: the Fantastic Four universe, our main universe with the Avengers, the Thunderbolts and Spider-Man, and the X-Men universe. From the trailers, they are going to be going back and forth between these universes throughout the film, so Spider-Man could simply be with the Avengers and travel with them.
How could he get pulled into that fight? Brand New Day already showed us the connection. Yelena Belova is in the movie, and it turns out the leaked reports that she and Spider-Man take a bath together were true, just not in a tiny tub, more in a spa or Yelena's office. That showed us she actually cares for him. If a universal or multiversal threat is coming, you want everyone you can get to help fight it, so Yelena going to recruit Spider-Man makes sense, especially since she is really the only Avenger at this point who has a relationship with him.
I wouldn't be surprised if he was edited out of some of the X-Men universe trailer footage. We also heard, and I cannot remember exactly when, that Tom Holland's stunt double might have been spotted on the Doomsday set, though that stunt double could always be working for someone else, or Peter Parker could have a small role, maybe shown only at the very end of the movie. I do think option one is more likely and that he is probably not in Doomsday, but this is the option I think most people actually want.
Theory Three: Peter Parker Escapes the Multiverse's Collapse on a Life Raft
The third theory, which I think is the most interesting because the post-credit scene is genuinely ambiguous, is that this is a life raft situation, that Peter Parker is in the void. In the Secret Wars comics, Reed Richards builds a life raft, and whoever is in it survives the ending of the multiverse. In the comics, Spider-Man is actually on that raft, along with Miles Morales and Star-Lord, and since Star-Lord is on our Earth right now, there is a real connection we could draw there too.
We also know that Ant-Man appears to be telling his daughter Cassie that she and the Young Avengers will not join the final fight against Doom, and that if the Avengers fail, she should get people out to the Quantum Realm. Through insider reports, we've heard that heroes are going to survive Doomsday without ending up on Battleworld, whether in the void, the Quantum Realm, or a life raft, because anyone placed on Battleworld will likely have their memories wiped or replaced with new Battleworld memories.
If Spider-Man escaped via a life raft, that would make him a major player in Avengers: Secret Wars, giving him a big role since he skipped Doomsday, and he could be one of the people who remembers everything that happened before, helping form a new Avengers team once he reaches Battleworld. I think this option would be interesting because it would show more of the multiverse's destruction, and it could still bring him into Doomsday at the very end, especially given those recent reshoots with a stunt double. It would also make for a strong post-credit scene in Doomsday itself: everyone thinks they lost, everyone is mind controlled on Battleworld with their memories erased, and then the stinger reveals that some people escaped on a life raft, with hope still alive heading into Secret Wars.
What do you think actually happened to Peter Parker in that post-credit scene?
