Spider-Man: Brand New Day Re-Release With Extra Footage Is Reportedly in the Works, and We Think It's Unnecessary
A Claire Temple scene was cut and I think it was reported there's new Hulk footage, but we're not convinced the box office push is worth it
A re-release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day with extra footage is reportedly in the works, and we aren't excited about it. It was called lame, and also unnecessary. In my mind, this is all for money.
The movie is still playing in theaters right now, so it would go out of theaters and then be re-released once again, which I find interesting. I'll also get into the footage that might be added, including a cut Claire Temple scene and possible new Hulk material.
The Brand New Day re-release looks like a push for a box office milestone
The case against it was simple. The complaint: it's lame because "it's just not necessary." The movie did great on its own, and we don't need to go push for extra money. The thinking is that it's trying to hit a box office number.
From the figures we were looking at, the movie is at almost 2.5 billion dollars worldwide, or 2.495 billion globally. Domestically it's at 950 million, so it's 50 million away from 1 billion domestic. I think that's probably what they're going for. Maybe it could be the first movie to ever do a billion dollars domestic. For comparison, Spider-Man: No Way Home made 1.92 billion, which I believe was the global figure.
I understand the appeal of the milestone. Obviously you'd want to hit that, and I wanted to hit that as well. But that's entirely what it is.
Rosario Dawson's Claire Temple was cut from Spider-Man: Brand New Day
Rosario Dawson's character Claire Temple was confirmed to have been cut from the movie. She was supposed to be one of the nurses at the hospital, which would have been cool, going back to Daredevil season 1 on Netflix. Claire is a nurse who gives medical aid to vigilantes, and she appeared in the first and second seasons of Daredevil and in Jessica Jones. She was a decent sized part of that run.
The understanding is that there will be more surprises in the extra footage. I think it was reported that there's going to be new Hulk footage.
I don't think Daredevil was ever filmed for Brand New Day
One fan said they would only go if there's a scene with a really good lawyer. I don't think they ever really shot anything with Daredevil. I think there were scenes shot with Claire, and that's why they're going to put that scene in there, because it was already shot.
Matt Murdock, the really good lawyer, did appear in No Way Home, so I feel like it would have been pretty easy to put him in Brand New Day. They just decided not to. I wasn't counting on it, to be perfectly honest.
I might still go, but not for the extra footage
I'm not going to lie, I might not go to the theaters to see this one. I might, though, because each time I've tried to watch Spider-Man: Brand New Day again, something has happened. I went with my brother, and within the first 20 minutes he had a medical condition and I had to take him to the hospital. We literally had to leave the movie.
So that might be why I go see it again. I'm not going to go for the footage. I'd go because I want to see the movie again, and there's nothing wrong with that.
We don't want re-releases to become a big trend
Neither of us wants this to become a big trend. Avatar came back out years later and retook first place after Endgame did it, and it almost feels like that re-release money shouldn't even count. That would be fine, because Endgame would still be in first place. Put simply: "If we don't consider re-releases, Avengers Endgame is the biggest movie of all time."
There's genuine hope that Avengers: Endgame does reclaim that spot as the biggest movie of all time, and it's probably going to be closer. At one point the gap being discussed was 36 million, and I don't know if they're going to do it, though I really hope they do. One report says Avengers: Endgame is heavily trending to pass Avatar.
A fan theory about who survives Doomsday
One fan asked whether all the heroes in a new trailer could be a teaser for the only characters left who survive Doomsday until Secret Wars comes out. I don't remember everyone who was in it. Maybe, but I don't think so, because we don't have Magneto or Professor X there, and Professor X dies all the time. He might die.
I think Bucky dies and I think Mystique dies. Falcon might die, and I think M'Baku might die as well. I don't think the theory is right, but I like the thought.
Would a Brand New Day re-release with extra footage get you back to the theater?
