Spider-Man: Brand New Day Beats Avengers Endgame's Box Office Record, and Spider-Man 5 Is Already in the Works

The film has the biggest domestic opening weekend in history, and Sony is reportedly moving away from spin-offs to focus on Spider-Man himself.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day just beat a box office record that had been held by Avengers Endgame, and there is a lot more Spider-Man news breaking at the same time, from Sony's changing plans for its universe to word that Spider-Man 5 is already being talked about.

Brand New Day's 360 Million Dollar Opening Surpasses Avengers Endgame's Record

Spider-Man: Brand New Day now has a record breaking 360 million dollar domestic opening weekend, surpassing Avengers Endgame's 357 million. That gives it the biggest domestic opening weekend of all time, beating Endgame by a narrow margin. Endgame is still, box office wise, the biggest superhero film of all time and the second biggest movie of all time, though I count it as the first since Avatar's number one spot came from a re-release.

On top of the opening weekend record, Brand New Day has already crossed a billion dollars worldwide. Endgame reached a billion in 5 days, while Brand New Day took 6 days, making it the second fastest film ever to hit that mark.

All of that is enough to make me ask: talk to me about superhero fatigue now. I know some people will say it is just Spider-Man, one of the biggest characters of all time, but this is still very much a superhero film putting up these numbers.

Is Tom Holland Now the Best Spider-Man Ever?

I cannot even say for certain if Brand New Day is the best Spider-Man film yet, but it is definitely one of the best, and it is right up there for me. Tom Holland's performance in this film is, in my opinion, the best I have ever seen from him, and I think the whole cast did an incredible job.

Because of these numbers and the massive success of the film, a lot of people are claiming this solidifies Tom Holland as the best Spider-Man. But box office numbers alone do not decide who plays a role best. So I will put the question back to you: do you think Tom Holland is the best Spider-Man and Peter Parker ever, or do you think it is Andrew Garfield or Tobey Maguire?

Spider-Man 5 Is Already in Development, and Tom Holland Wants to Play Peter Parker Until He's 90

Tom Holland has said he wants to keep making Spider-Man movies for as long as he can, until he's 90. Spider-Man 5 has already been confirmed to be in the works and is already being talked about, though Holland has said things are still a little unclear right now. Either way, it is on the cards.

Given what Brand New Day set up, without getting into spoilers, there is clearly a lot of story left to continue in the new universe after the reboot, even with Avengers Doomsday and Secret Wars still coming. Spider-Man looks set to be one of the main characters, if not the main character, going forward in the new MCU, alongside Sadie Sink, which I am genuinely looking forward to.

Sony Is Reportedly Dropping Spin-offs Like Madam Web and Morbius to Focus on Spider-Man Films

Sony has recently said it does not really have plans to continue the live-action spin-offs it has made in the past, like Madam Web, Morbius, and the Venom films. Tom Rothman said in an interview with Variety that ultimately audiences were not satisfied enough with those movies. Whether that is a fair assessment, I think it is a fair one, and I also question whether Sony itself was satisfied with them, or whether they were only made to help Sony keep its Spider-Man rights, since the studio has to make a Spider-Man related movie every so often to retain them.

It now looks like Sony is streamlining toward solo, or solo-ish, Spider-Man movies made every handful of years to maintain those rights, rather than spinning off villain-focused films without Spider-Man in them. Honestly, I think that is what everybody wants at this point, a new Spider-Man movie every few years with hopefully improving quality, instead of the spin-off projects that we know did not work. Sony had originally said it was taking time off from those spin-offs, then said it would eventually return to them, and now seems to have landed on Spider-Man himself being the key. It took them long enough to figure that out. Since everybody wants more Spider-Man, and this is shaping up to be a contender for the biggest movie of all time, they would be fools not to keep making Spider-Man 5.

Sony had announced that Brand New Day was set to start showing on IMAX screens beginning August 7th in the US. That was expected to bring in more moviegoers going to see it again, which would only add to the already record breaking numbers the film has put up.

Tom Holland's Spider-Man Still Doesn't Have His Own Iconic Villain, But Kingpin Could Change That

Going forward, a lot of fans have pointed out that Tom Holland's Spider-Man still does not have one single iconic villain of his own. Vulture and Mysterio were framed as conflicts tied to Tony Stark, and in Spider-Man: No Way Home the villains were not his either, they belonged to the other Spider-Men. Brand New Day features a lot of villains, but again there is no single traditional villain who is specifically Peter Parker's own.

There has been word that Kingpin was wanted for this film but that Sony ultimately went a different way, which is actually a good sign that Kingpin could be the villain of the next one. With Daredevil: Born Again season 3 coming and building Kingpin and the street level side of things back up, including the Defenders, Daredevil, and Punisher appearing in Brand New Day, that groundwork looks set up for Kingpin to finally become a proper Spider-Man villain. I would not be surprised if that happens in Spider-Man 5, especially since the film includes a leftover poster for Kingpin's mayoral run, suggesting that direction was at least considered.

Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen Could Be Next, Kevin Feige Confirms Live-Action Miles Is Coming

Tom Holland has said many times that he hopes the future includes Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen, and I really hope we get Spider-Gwen soon too. Marvel president Kevin Feige has already confirmed live-action Miles is coming, saying plainly, "Live-action Miles is coming." That will have to wait until after Beyond the Spider-Verse, and I would assume he arrives in the new rebooted universe, maybe even in Secret Wars if we are lucky, though I would not count on that.

I still love Brand New Day despite it not giving Peter Parker a traditional single villain. What do you think about all of this, and what did you think of the movie?
